A few weeks ago, Mermaid and I ran away for the weekend. We went to Charlottesville, VA and visited a number of wineries. It was a fantastic time. Beautiful scenery, mostly good some great wine, the best company pure relaxation.

The fact that I there guaranteed something out of the ordinary had to occurred to me, be seen by me, or overheard by me. Saturday was very hot. After visiting and tasting at 6 wineries we were tired. The last place we visited was located in a wooded glen. The shade was just what we needed. The winery had a huge front porch with Adirondack chairs with overstuffed cushions. Nirvana it would seem. We purchased some cheese, bread, and a flight of wines to sample. Settling in on the porch, we began to cool off and enjoy a quiet moment.

Just then the serenity was broken, nay shattered by a gaggle of 40 something women on a girls weekend. Obviously fueled by a day of tasting themselves. They occupied a spot in the porch as well. Each carried a flight of wine to taste. The ring leader began to read from the tasting sheet.

She was not quiet. The people seated across the parking lot in the wooded picnic area turned to see what was happening.

“It says you should taste a bit of raspberry, chocolate and smoke. It should finish with a mocha flourish.”

Another chimed in: “I don't taste that, I taste strawberry” she was tasting a wine from another flight that had different wines included..

This went on for a few minutes.

The conversation turned to childbirth, husbands (current and future) and . The ringleader, who would qualify as a Milf in most books started talking about her 13 year old . The conversation went on quieter than before.

Until she said, “My wants her own rabbit” and she wasn't talking about the furry cute kind.

A collective gasp went up from the others in the group.

Then she said, “I love mine. I am going to buy her one of her own. It is part of life.”

The others were strangely silent.

“Y'all need to lighten up, so when does that ladies night start?” she added to break the silence.

OOH OOH THAT SMELL CAN'T YOU SMELL THAT SMELL

I am not sure about anyone else, but I know certain smells can trigger floods of memories for me.

Having said that, like my memory my smeller is suspect even on the best of days. My loving Mermaid however has a sniffer bloodhounds would kill for.

“Do you smell that?” she'll ask

“Smell what?” is my usual reply

“Somebody 1.375 miles to the southeast is grilling steaks. T-bones I believe. They just flipped them over. Don't they know you should not salt meat while it is on the grill?” She says with an air of confidence.

Ok that maybe a slight distortion of the truth. She can't smell salt.

Back to the point.

Of the things I can smell most of my favorites are associated with and trigger thoughts of summer.

Freshly cut grass, a field of hay drying in the sun, and my personal favorite coconut scented suntan lotion (I smell that and I am at the beach immediately)

Since I have started riding my motorcycle to work on a regular basis I have discovered a variety of new summer smells:

The manure wagon from the dairy farm I ride past. Love following that one first thing in the morning.

The yard debris recycling truck. There is nothing like the smell of rotting grass clippings baked in a steel box at 95 degrees for a day.

The good old grease collection truck. Rancid grease need I say more. Every time I smell that I think:
in a few months that will be in some woman's make-up so I can live with the smell for a bit.

Nothing compares to the olfactory odyssey I make walking from my parking place to the back door of my office.

Imagine if you will: a warm summer morning, after a scorching 99 degree day. First I smell the Mexican place frying tortilla chips, so far so good.

Then the first assault on my nose, the heady aroma of the Chinese take-out place's dumpster. I smells so bad even the rats avoid it.

That is nothing compared to the symphony of perfumes wafting from the Sushi restaurant's dumpster.

Once you smell sun baked decaying fish bits it is burned into your brain.

Until Next Time
I am as always stopping to smell the roses if I could find some

The Mermaid and I fell victim to one of the greatest marketing schemes of the year. On July 11, the ever present at least in a great deal of the country, 7-ll was giving away Slurpees. These were sample size freebies. 7.11 ounces to be exact.

So on 7/11, 7-11, gave away 7.11 ounce Slurpees for free.

July 11th was a Saturday. Monday evening about 10pm Mermaid asks “Do you want to go get a Slurpee? I have been craving one since that little one on Sunday”

I am always up for a Slurpee. So we jumped in the truck and headed to one of two near by 7-11s We struck out there. No good flavors. So back in the truck to the second close 7-11.

This one had good flavors, but none of them were ready.

That's right. At this point it had become a quest. Back to the truck, to head to the cluster of 4, 7-11s within a mile of each other. Two which are right across the street from each other.

We did not even walk into the third one. We could see the flavors from the outside. So off we went again.

At the fourth one we hit Slurpee paydirt. Flavors we both liked and all were ready.

Cue the victory dance music.

No we were not high. We just would not be denied.

Until Next Time

I am as always ready for a good quest.

I am back. I think. Logging on the other day, I noticed I have not written a word in over six months.
The past nine months have been an adventure. Not the great vacation to a tropical island kind of adventure, more like a colonscopy is an adventure.

I kept feeling as if something was missing. Knowing me, I figured I lost something and couldn't remember what it was let alone where it was.

Slowly, of course, I realized I had not been letting the voices out of my head. So here I am again.

I was going to detail my trials and tribulations to get things off of my chest.

Until this morning, when I noticed something that was odd even for me. One of the customers was watching the Price is Right. All the people in the studio were wearing fake Groucho glasses. It turns out it was a repeat of the April Fools show. The odd thing was I found one of the female contestants to be quite sexy wearing the Groucho glasses, mustache and nose. Like I said odd even for me.

Have I created my own fetish? Should I be worried?

I figured no better place then this get this out of my head

PS. After a bit of reflection, or perhaps rationalization I decided that this just validates my long held belief that sexy is an inside out thing.

Mermaid and I have a large urn like pot in front of our house that we converted to a fountain. The sound is soothing. The hoards of wildlife attracted to and by the Mermaid (think Snow White with out the entourage). The fountain, I mean water feature, (I almost forgot my HGTV speak for a moment) has a problem with algae. It gets leaves and acorns falling in it daily. That and lots of sun makes algae quite happy

All summer long we have been meaning to add blue food coloring to the water. The theory being the dark water will not as readily grow algae.

A few weeks ago while at the store I remembered the dye. I selected dark blue. Then I saw those tablets that turn toilet water blue. Score! I thought. Then I saw the new and improved with chlorine type. Score again!!!

When I got home I proudly showed Mermaid my find. She told me those tablet will foam up and cause all kinds of problems.

Smugly I said “They don't foam in the toilet” and went out front to prove my point.

I tossed the blue and the chlorine tablets in. I checked back in awhile to find not just foam, but blue foam. It covered the top of the water.

To her credit Mermaid did not actually say I told you so.

We dealt with the foam until yesterday. I decided to pump out the water feature to retrieve the tablet and throw it away.

Mermaid posed the question, “Couldn't you just reach in and fish it out with your hands?”

I said “not with out elbow length rubber gloves. I don't want to look like a Smurf”

“Smurfs are cute” She replied

I pumped out the water, removed the pump and the stand it sits on. There was about an inch of water remaining. I reached blindly into clean out the acorns and leaves.

One guess what I grabbed instead....

Yep the blue tablet

did I mention I forgot my gloves

Until Next Time
I am as always learning the hard way

INADVERTENT ART

Periodically when answering my cell phone I accidentally take pictures. No, not those kinds of photos for the up skirt or down shirt fetish enthusiasts. I mean pictures of my nostrils, my chin or my personal favorite the inside of my pocket. If any one is interested in these photos they are listed on that ever popular auction site as abstract art. Signed numbered originals are available.

For Enquiring minds the inside of my pocket is absolutely dark. Leaving the viewer to contemplate what ever they wish while gazing at my inadvertent art.

Semi-seriously I have taken like 50 pictures of the inside of my pocket. I even switched to a belt clip case. That did not help much. I have take numerous pictures of the inside of it as well. It looks amazingly like the inside of my pocket, without that warm fuzzy closeness the pocket photos have.

Does this happen to anyone else out there?

Until Next Time
I am as always still hoping the world appreciates my art before I die so I can cash in (either that or waiting for the grant from the NEA to kick in)

This is a collection of random thoughts, occurrences and an unapologetic commercial endorsement.

Which begs the question. Once random things are collected, are they still random?

My shoulder is much better. A switch of medication and I am pretty much 100%. The miracle drug, an anti-inflammatory medication called Mobic. Better living through chemistry

I have been commuting to work as often as possible by motorcycle. This is a new experience for me. Quite freeing and soul satisfying which I had anticipated. What I did not expect was the wide variety of smells I took in on my journey. Some heavenly, fresh baked bread, some more earthy freshly spread manure from the dairy farm I pass. No kidding I could smell the vanilla tobacco from a pipe in a near by car. Cigars, cheese burgers and coffee a smörgåsbord for my nose. Which is a special treat for me. In spite of having a big honking nose, I don't have the most acute sense of smell. Mermaid however has a sense of smell that rivals any Bloodhound. She can smell a flower from across the street, a skunk from across the county line, and my 's soccer boots from just about anywhere.

This brings us to the commercial portion of this blog.

I purchased my a new pair of soccer boots from the leading on-line/catalog soccer shop. After three days of wearing the sole began to separate from the upper. Long story short, to speed up the process. I immediately ordered a replacement pair and then returned the defective pair after receiving the new ones. It took three weeks and 5 phone calls to get my refund.

I will never purchase another thing from So cerdot om if you c what I mean.

Now for a rousing endorsement. Zappos is the bomb of all bombs. I surprised Mermaid with a pair of new Keds awhile ago. Soon after placing the order I realized I ordered the wrong size. I called to change the order. They apologized to me for my error and paid for express shipping to make it up to me. She had her shoes the next day.

I was so impressed I ordered myself a pair of boots for the bike. I placed the order at 7:30 pm one day. I received an email confirming 4-5 day free delivery. About an hour later I received a second email telling me I was being upgraded for free to second day shipping. 12 hours later I had my new boots.
I highly recommend Zappos.

I have started painting again. Like always my work is only for me.

One last thing, I just heard a commercial for a women's only gym. It was offering one free workout and free at home breast self exam kits. What could possibly be in that kit? It seems to me if you have breasts, a hand and a mirror you have all you need

Until Next Time
I am as always happy to be here.

Thought I would give you all an update. My shoulder slowly getting better. I should be back more regularly in a week or so

I saw a bumper sticker the other day I wanted to share:

It is a shame closed minds don't always come with closed mouths.

Guess Mom had it right when she said if you can't say something good, don't say anything.

I have partially torn of my right rotator cuff. For added excitement I cut my left thumb and have three stitches in it. The cut and the tear happened at two different times. Truth be told I have no idea when I hurt my shoulder it just started hurting a few days ago. Only I could misremember a shoulder injury.

Basically I can't type for awhile.
