The benefit of tuning by ear

So I fixed the campervan and we've been taking holidays all over the place. Nice, but one tiny fly in the ointment. I'd purchased a timing lamp, consulted manuals and set the engine to a factory setting. Result has been sluggish engine acceleration. To the point when some hills are impossible. Top speed 65mph downhill with a good wind behind us. Starting is slow, dangerous at junctions and traffic islands.
I've decided to try a different approach. With the TDC (Top dead centre) point established, I am tuning the engine by ear. Listening for smooth running and also feeling for smooth in the vibrations of the engine. When I have the best setting I'm taking measurements with the lamp again, noting the new reset point.
I know she's an automatic with just three speeds and a 2000cc engine, but I know she's more than capable of better performance.

I know what you mean about performance, some of those engines from the early '80s and earlier had drastically retarded timing to reduce NOx emissions. My old Honda actually had a idle setting of only 2 degrees advanced. It perked right up with another 22 degrees of static timing. Then it burned the head right off the #3 exhaust valve...

Opus.....that's always the worry with tuning by ear. Still, nothing lasts forever
