Last weekend was interesting. The family and I visited the owner of a large Winnebago camper van with a view to buying it. The van is a Winnebago body welded to a right hand drive truck. It's bigger than anything I have ever driven. The only problem is that I don't think the van has had an MOT since 2006. This means that it will probably not pass an MOT and will need work, welding most likely. Well fingers crossed anyway. I get excited at the thought of pimping out a large camper with room for eight adults.

This picture is of a wonderful clothing optional beach between Barmouth and Shell Island in North Wales. The beach is clean, sand dunes are a haven for wildlife and the beach seems to go on forever.

Designed to break......

This week I have been battling to keep my tumble drier going for longer than the two years that I have had it. The unit was designed with a drum that turned on a brass spindle resting in a copper bearing. The bearing was poor quality and so the weight of the drum sheared the spindle. I re-built it with scrap metal and a new industrial grade bearing. Looks ugly but might last a while. Then again.....
The picture shows the fix that I had to do to fit the better bearing.

Monday was interesting. I did some driving for a local college, which meant cycling to the college rather than leaving my van to the tender mercy of some students. After about six months of limited cycling I was quickly reminded of my old knee issues. Painful knees are not helped by a heavy bicycle that might just as well be made of cast iron. It's alloy frame with a steel chainset. Damned heavy. I plan to cycle to work if I get more work a few miles from home. With this in mind I'm designing myself a recumbent. After completing my campervan project I've improved my welding to the point where I'm confident of good results. Yes I could just spend a few hundred on a nice light chainset for my mountain bike, but the sit up and beg seating position does my knees no favors. I need to be laying back.

Opting for Christmas by the beach......

When I was a , my parents used to take us to see my maternal grandparents for Christmas dinner. A good time was had by all, my great grandmother and my great uncle would usually turn up too. My uncle would also be around unless he was away on business. All in all it was a lovely time. Sadly my paternal grandparents lived too far away and so I rarely saw them. Never mind.....
Anyhow, my dear mother decided that she doesn't want to do a big family christmas this year. By big, I mean, spend more than an hour with her grandchildren. It occurs to me this is a bit mean spirited. It's not as if they need to do any driving. So Jess and I decided to take the camping instead. We're going to decorate the van, get on the road and go south. Not sure if it's possible to do Christmas dinner on a camping stove but we're going to prepare things in advance so with planning it may only be as bad as boxing day left overs.

The benefit of tuning by ear

So I fixed the campervan and we've been taking holidays all over the place. Nice, but one tiny fly in the ointment. I'd purchased a timing lamp, consulted manuals and set the engine to a factory setting. Result has been sluggish engine acceleration. To the point when some hills are impossible. Top speed 65mph downhill with a good wind behind us. Starting is slow, dangerous at junctions and traffic islands.
I've decided to try a different approach. With the TDC (Top dead centre) point established, I am tuning the engine by ear. Listening for smooth running and also feeling for smooth in the vibrations of the engine. When I have the best setting I'm taking measurements with the lamp again, noting the new reset point.
I know she's an automatic with just three speeds and a 2000cc engine, but I know she's more than capable of better performance.

Well here in sunny Wolverhampton, the autumn colours are appearing as summer fades to autumn and eventually winter. Since getting the motorhome through it's MOT we have done a few lovely holidays. Now the summer is fading, we are looking forward to camping through the colder months. Year round camp sites, days out in Stratford, Warwick and other tourist spots. Camping in pub car parks to enjoy Christmas drinks with friends. Ahhh, good times to come.

The small house movement.

For some time now, I have been interested in building and owning a very small house. This is not one room living or some apartment hell. No, what I'm after is a high spec portable living space. Soemthing stylish and more substantial than a caravan, trailer or an RV. Google the Tumbleweed tiny house company for an idea of what I'm lusting after. In my idle moments, I wonder how I might design something that the whole family can use.
It's the whole idea of having something that fits on the back of a truck, made of wood, GRP and alloy. A little home with insulation in the walls

Over six months ago Jess and I purchased an old camper van. A Bedford CF2 camper van to be precise. It was falling apart when we got it,but recently we got it renovated to the stage of passing an MOT,(Like a State Inspection if you're in the USA),and so we were able to go on holiday to the coast.
Our most recent holiday, the van decided to suffer from overheating while stationary. Not good, so I replaced the cooling system, Rosie the van, say hello to a new BMW radiator, electric fan and an alloy oil cooler off a big engine motorbike. To cut a very long story short, the changes were not easy. A stock radiator would have been nice for the vauxhall engine, but proved impossible. The existing viscous fan needed to be cut out with an angle grinder to make room for the custom pipes. The oil cooler needed it's own protective mounting in the front bumper,(Fender) including an air scoop. Trapped air in the tubes caused problems. Worse overheating and the services of a recovery truck. I re-plumbed and installed a radiator filler bottle. Here's hoping the fix works. I'm going to test it later this evening.

Jess and I love making love in the van. The seats in the back convert into a comfy bed. The top pops up to create a bed for one and our other two enjoy sleeping on the floor. Next year we will either install a bunk bed or upgrade to an old winnebago.
That said, while we can afford something larger, actually driving it is another matter. Down the tight roads of Cornwall, Devon, England and Wales, anything larger than our van will suffer restrictions.

The Birmingham riots have been and gone. Idiots ran riot through my beloved city and trashed several shops. They looted designer goods, not for any need but because they have an IQ in single digits and poor parenting as . There are going to be many evictions as these rioters are found and their social housing withdrawn. Where they live with their parents, their families are facing eviction. I shed no tears. The picture shows my favourite candy shop, trashed.
