"Attractive & Fat"

Jes Baker is my new hero. She could be my new lust fantasy, too. If only she were older or I were younger. Or if she'd have a thing for older men. Maybe you've seen the photos already. She took on Abercrombie & Fitch over their "above size 10 isn't cool, attractive, or all-American" policy and the notion that larger women "don't belong" in their clothes.

She's a plus sized gal. She's also quite attractive and sexy. She didn't agree that she's not attractive enough for Abercrombie & Fitch styles and wrote the their CEO to let them know. "I challenge the separation of attractive and fat, and I assert that they are compatible regardless of what you believe,"

But she did more than that. She's studied art for the majority of her academic life and she put that to use by mimicing a typical A&F ad spread with herself in the part of the typical skinny model they use. She worked with a professional photographer and model to create the same glamour photography effects used in A&F ads. She replaced the words "Abercrombie & Fitch" in the layout with "Attractive & Fat" in the same typeface.

She gets no argument here. She does look attractive and desirable. And, I think, more than the real ads. If you search the title of this post you'll find the other pictures from her ad spoofs.

Here's something the A&Fs of the world might want to think about. I read about a study that had been done of porn downloading habits. I don't remember the actual number percentages. The most frequently downloaded images were middle aged chubby women. More than younger women and more than average and skinny women. Whether A&F thinks it's "cool" or not plus sized women in sexy and stylish clothes appeal to men. And women will buy those clothes. And most men won't think it is cool, attractive, and all-American. Even if they don't have the A&F logo.

I wonder if I can convince her that older men are cool and attractive too...

What do you think? Is Jes right on with her stand that fat girls belong in stylish, sexy clothes, too?

Mike Jefferies, CEO of A&F:
“In every school there are the cool and popular kids, and then there are the not-so-cool kids. Candidly, we go after the cool kids. We go after the attractive all-American kid with a great attitude and a lot of friends. A lot of people don’t belong [in our clothes], and they can’t belong.”

As a matter of fact, Interested, yes, that is exactly what he's saying. He has absolutely no qualms about saying it, either, because there are millions of others who seek the intangible cachet of being "cool" by wearing his clothes. He and Dov Davidoff are cut from the same cloth, no pun intended.

I can't figure out how to post a pic to my reply, but all you have to do is Google his name and look through the images to see what a joke he really is.

N_Joimi replies on 5/26/2013 7:37 am:
Yes, that;s his marketing niche. Those who seek that cache and the (assumed) status it brings, at least among like minded peers, are his bread and butter. And I have no qualms with his right to engage in niche marketing and using snobbery to create value for his brand. But when he's insulting to those outside his niche he shouldn't be surprised that they push back.

Thanks for stopping by and leaving your thoughts.

If that is what Jes wants then she is right....everyone should be able to dress in what suits them and makes them feel stylish and sexy. However dressing in the clothes that are hyped out as being stylish and sexy won't make anyone look like the people in the advertisements even if you are as thin as they are. Wearing clothes that are the latest fashion must have won't change what you are.....each of us has to find our own individual style.

The advertisements use professionally produced glamour photos. No one looks like the people in the ads just by wearing their clothes! It takes professional make-up, lighting and soft focus lenses to look like that. That's part of why I like what Jes did in applying all that technique to put herself on an equal footing with the "regular" size models. Of course, beauty and style are all in our own perception. I think Jes looks very hot sexy in these photos. And it's not the clothes that make her look that way.

I love her. I'm going to go look at the rest of her shots after this. I'm glad you shared this.

Thanks. I've never been a slave to fashion branding myself. And while there's nothing wrong with it per se, I do think sometimes the snob appeal goes way too far. Building a brand loyalty shouldn't involve saying things that are hurtful or mean to other people. I think Jes' message goes beyond just a dig at the offensive attitude of the A&F CEO's comments and shows that big is sexy, too.

Living in a place where if you're over 95lbs, you're considered as being morbidly obese, none of the brand-chasing girls would think the dude said anything wrong.

Ah, cultural differences. Mr. Jeffries might have a hard time selling his kind of brand image there if everyone fits into the "cool" group and "belongs" in his clothes.

Men like yourself have made me feel comfortable in my skin. Thank you!I'm plus size and would prefer to wear stylish clothes than loose frumpy frocks sold by some of the plus size shops.

Oh course, I'd rather be naked, but that doesn't go over big at most of the local establishments.

Aw, thanks for your compliment. I agree wholeheartedly about stylish clothes for plus sizes. It always catches my eye (and excites my imagination). Not just skinny girl clothes made bigger. That's probably where those frumpy looking frocks come from. Skinny girls don't have as much curviness and neither do their clothes.

Seriously though there are stylish clothes made for larger women and hopefully more designers will catch on. And more women will realize they can dress sexy.

I understand the A&F dig but I only use the term FAT when I refer to myself or my particulars. Fat is so Nondescript.

Voluptuous
Curvy
Plump & Juicy
A women of Substance or Stature
An Abundance of Sensuous Delight
an overflowing cornucopia of curvaceousness
A bountiful beauty
a plenitude of pretty

And Sexy isn't a size it's a concept it doesn't start in your groin it starts in your brain. and there's nothing sexier than a sincere smile..and the bigger the better.

It's not a term I usually use myself since it's associated with negative concepts of body image. I was reflecting what Jes herself had said about her campaign. I do like your list of alternative expressions. Thanks for commenting.
