Looking forward........
Looking forward........ Jess and I have been preparing for the birth of our third . Today we received our nappies that should take the baby from birth to potty trained. Instead of the environmentally unsound disposable nappies/diapers, were using the washable cotton sort. They're a step up from the nappies I had as a baby. No safety pins for a start. Velcro and pop fasteners for the perfect fit. We think the washable nappies will save us a fortune and save a lump of landfill waste the size of a house. We've spent a lot of time looking at all the things needed for the baby. In my day it was just a bunch of nappies, a plastic bath, a cot and toys. Today things seem to be very technical and we wonder if most of it isn't just companies playing on parental paranoia. Baby milk for example. They say breast is best and so we have the breast pump and bottles for dad to feel junior when mum is sleeping. OK.....but then we're bombarded with different ways to clean the bottles when regular soap and water will do. We're also bombarded with adverts for formula milk that offers things the older generation never had and never needed. In the states there is also the Gerber life plan and similar....insurance for baby. Ohh and bonus, when the baby turns 18 they'll be eligible to apply for another poor value insurance product. Hmmm lets not. Baby food is another big con. OK, if you're out for a day of shopping, a jar of baby food is as cost effective as buying a meal for another member of the family. Convenient and safe. However, some parents just feed their these baby foods all the time. The cost of this is shocking. Since we cook full meals from scratch at home we've simply bought a food processor to make our own baby food. In most cases the recipes are same as for adults, but without the salt content and lower sugar. Finally, baby cleaning cloths/towels. We've decided to minimise our use of baby wipes. They're expensive and ineffective. Instead we decided to buy a large number of little washable cotton towels. The big stores charge a fortune for rather rough examples. We found ours on the internet and then I found a good source at the local car parts shop. Soft cotton towels for pampering delicate paintwork, half the price of the baby stores and twice as soft. Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life. |
