Welding welding and the art of laying prone in the road
Welding welding and the art of laying prone in the road Well the car failed it's annual MOT test. Five patches of rust in critical places. The local garage that did the MOT test are very good and honest. This is more than can be said for the place that did the last MOT. I suspect the last one was done by someone lazy who didn't look at the car. Anyhow....... To fix the holes I have been laying in the road with cars driving past inches from my head whilst I applied the angle grinder to all the rust. I have every confidence in the ability of most drivers to avoid me and the car....however it isn't a fun job. The car has been repaired with mostly filler, so applying the grinder revealed a big welding job. Damn. In fact, the holes are 12" X 12" and include the jacking points. The seatbelt mounting points are also involved. Lovely. Thankfully my neighbours are all friendly and tolerate my noise. I have been working in front of the house, fabricating new jacking points and floor panels. The weather has been kind too, not too much rain, which is good because arc welding can not be done in the rain. Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life. |

Doubleplus unfun. I hate "mechanics" that cover rust with bondo without stopping the rust first.

Opus....hmmm yes, it's not always easy to stop that rust but some people never try Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life.

I had some rusty suspension parts that I treated with a "rust converter" that made them black and semi-glossy so that they would last until I got the rest of the parts for that project. That was back in 1985, and the parts are still black and semi-glossy and have no further rust. I wish I could remember the name of the product, but I can't even remember what store I bought it from any more. I was living in a small town outside of Nashville TN and the store is long gone, building and all. I remember where I bought it, just not the name of the store.

Opus...yes I know the product. It was useful when I had my first car. I tried Jenolite rust treatment and Kurust both did pretty much the same for the rust. Don't ever give up searching for the fun in life.
