Feedback requested for possible change to

I realized that the blocked member tool has been discussed before but I would like to get some feedback on proposed changes. After reading comments about blocked members, it looks like many can be addressed by consolidating the different feature-centric blocks into a global block.

If we move to that direction, I would like to propose that if a member has been blocked for a single feature (e.g., posting on your blog or viewing your profile), we make that member blocked for all activities we currently block for related to you. It appears that many people are expecting this behavior when they click a "Block Member" link. Has anyone ever blocked someone but wanted to let them still interact with you using one or two features?

Also proposed is to simplify the blocked member page to just have a list of block usernames and possibly a checkbox next to them to block activity from the IP that the member last logged in from (but not show the IP to anyone).

Thanks for your comments (I will discontinue actively reading comments in this thread but leave it open for members to post - will skim later prior to implementation). After reading 50 posts, I am leaning towards changing blocks so that when a new person is being blocked for any one feature, we will automatically add them to all the feature blocks available. Members can still go the block member page and unblock certain features for the person... although, it happens very infrequently.

I am a fairly new member (since last September) and have not had to use the block format. My personal feeling is "if" I want to block anyone, I want them blocked from "all" my activities.

I don't know why it's separated into so many different categories now. Why would I ever want, for instance, to block someone from my blog, but not from having them email me? "Blocked" should be "blocked", period.

I like the idea of global blocking....frankly I want those people I have blocked not to appear anywhere on the site to me....I also don't want them to be able to see anything I do. Total global blocking please.

My opinion is like others: if I get to the place I need to block someone, I don't want them to know anything about where I "travel" in the site.

I like to chat on instant messenger, and I am not much into blogging. When I block someone I just dont want to chat with them anymore, I dont care if they read my profile or blog, in fact why not let them read it because who cares? I might want to blog about how stupid they were and if that is the case, they will most definitely need to read it. But you know they wont. Most of the men on instant messenger dont pay for membership anyway, so it's not like they are being deprived of reading anything. I see your point though, when they burn their bridge burn it all down.

Blocking by their IP address seems a bit odd. Most of us don't have a fixed IP address but are issued one from a block that our IPS uses.
So block an IP will not stop the offender but may cause some issues for the innocent.

I agree with if I block someone block them everywhere. You may also want to look at setting up a bell to ring when several people block the same user in a short period of time. This might get rid of some of the bots and fakes....hummm or some of them yours anyway?

There you go
That's all and none of it tragic.

This is a "Mee Too" response. If I block you I don't want you seeing a lock of my hair. I always check that universal box on the far right and hope it takes.

The magazine's Advice Lines is a subject where no blocking should ever be allowed. Period. It's an open forum, and blocking someone on that forum means it's no longer open.

Remove the blocking function from the Advice Lines. Even if that means anyone who wants to block someone cannot do so on the Advice Lines.

Thank you

Andrew replies on 2/26/2013 5:44 pm:
I think the advice line block is more to keep blocked member from posting on the question of the user... which seems fair... especially from an abusive member.

One item that came to light recently is the "New Home Page" 's
Activites Updates. Apparently, this synopsis seems to ignore or over ride any currently set user preferences, simply allowing the entire world to see all your recent stuff.

As it, things tagged to eventually go into areas marked Private or Friends Only, are totally visible to anyone, via this Recent Activity highlight. The Activities highlights even allows anyone to make comments and likes, even those people specifically blocked from accessing the areas these items are eventually destined for.

There are several posts on this in the Live Community Feedback threads for Feb.

If a member is going to be blocked, they should be blocked from this "Activities" area of the site, as well.

Andrew replies on 2/26/2013 5:53 pm:
I'll bring this up to developer tomorrow... it should have been an easy test to not include private photos in activity feed... if was overlooked, easy to fix.

I initially thought this would be a good idea, but I've now changed my mind.

This IP address block would work, if you make the presumption everyone either lives alone, or all roomates have their own personal internet provider (no routers), or has an absolutley uncrackable secure wireless feed.

I would not like to see the morning I wake up to find I'm banned from half the people in my search parameters, only because a neighbor hacked my wireless, and managed to get themselves banned.

If this does get implemented in some form...how about a "Last Chance Jack Ass" button for those that got banned, like an appeal feature????
You know..."Why did you Ban me?"

Well you aren't getting banned from the site, you're only getting "banned" by one individual. Unless you're engaging in stalkerish behavior (like I had to deal with last Autumn) in most cases y9ou probably not even know.

Hello Boss,

To throw in my cents on this issue. I have had to block certain members for stalkerish behavior, threats and abuse. If the member in question can not see anything another member does or says, then that eliminates the problem of back and forth "he said.. she said.. they said " Plus it saves other members from having to read through all the insults and abuse and being forced to take sides. In time when cooler heads prevail one can always unblock that member if they choose. People with an agenda against a member will use any means possible to get at them. Blogs, groups, Chat rooms, IMC, emails..all of these have been used by members wishing to disrupt the site and other members in general.

Happy Tues and Thanks for listening,

Ana6

Hey Andrew!! I am going to speak up. I have had 2 people on here that were serious stalkers, and 1 that was just causing trouble because he didn't like me or agree with my thinking. The 'global' block would work for me and many more people. If they can't see what I am doing anywhere it doesn't give them anything for fodder. They get much of what they are using to hurt someone by what they see posted. If they can't see anything we are doing then they don't have anything to post on. Unfortunately they can and often do make other profiles, I had one that actually made a profile using my home address and they entered the chatroom with it. They were handing out my personal information to total strangers and this puts a person in serious danger. Yes, I contacted the site and the legal department as well as my own police dept. to get it stopped. The site does need to step up to the plate to help some of us who have these serious stalker problems and help us out. I most definitely want a 'global.. you can't see anything I do and I can't see anything you do' button.

Blocking someone should mean a global blocking, including groups...is it possible... that if I block someone, that means they can NOT see the group I moderate? Global blocking should be total blocking, where they can not even see my comments around blogland either.

Ive had one person who I blocked who would follow my comments on other blogs, quote me and try to start a fight like that.

I realize there is a starbucks, I get what you mean there!

It would be nice to be able to block people from a group I moderate, my blogs, emailing me, flirting, etc... so global blocking should include joining a persons group too.

leave us the choice...total block or selective block..one blocks everything, the other just comments be it emails or blogs..as you can see from my testimonials i use the site for what it was meant for when i joined 10 years ago (with no pictures to post back than) to meet so i want options not any one group determining what goes and what stays the more options one has the happier they are

je ne regrette rien

Andrew replies on 2/27/2013 9:35 am:
For development, I am leaning to start with automatically putting the blocked member in all the blocks we currently have when you add them the first time to any of the blocks. Next, we will automatically check all the boxes for everyone (one time only)... yes, members will then have to go uncheck specific feature blocks if they want that person back... but it will help reduce confusion in the future.

I have a certain undesireable character blocked from viewing my profile but keep him visible in the chat room so I can monitor his posts for abuse. He tends to get extremely abusive towards women who aren't living in Japan and those who don't reciprocate his interest. He also has a tendency to trash me and my friends when he thinks I'm not looking. He's on his 7th or 8th ID now.

With that being said, an initial total block would be good but keep a tweaking option. Right now, when I go to block someone from the message center, it is a pain to try to figure out which page that person is on, since I have 500+ in the list, and block the person across the board.

I do like the block as it is now. If there are some folks who i do not want to see in the IM i just block that part. That way i do not see them in the IM list and will not forget and send something to them by accident.

I still want them to send me email if the want. I just do not want to chat live with them at this time.

So the block by feature is quite good.

I would have it set up to where you could block someone from seeing your blog comments on other's blogs.

While I understand the desire to change to a global, I would rather not do it that way. I tend to prefer having it where someone can look at the profile, continue to email me, but not be allowed to read my own blog. I'd prefer to let them know whatever I want to let them know.

I would say the best compromise for me is to have the block button be a global block for members who don't know how to use the site, but continue to use the current blocked members page where I can determine what to let them see. Just have to default to global unless otherwise chosen.

I would also prefer it if the blocked member is deleted from your blocked list if they decide to delete/remove their profile.

When I hit that Ignore or block button, I want that person to not hear me read me or have anything to do with me. During the bot days I was filling ignore daily. You got that under control for now but there are still many out there. The real persons who are just plain jerks That I block in one area,I want them blocked in all my areas I go.

Thanks for the update. Now let the standards read profiles while you are at it.

As far concerns there's nothing you can do to control stalkers, banned people from viewing your profile, or make trouble in community service lines, blings community you name it etc etc. They can still make new profile people are not blind or stupid other then be hypertical idiot and need to grew up act like an adult. Unfortunately they restore to act childish.

The main thing all you can do keep blocking just keep on watch for trouble makers..

Blocked should be blocked...unfortunately if they have already Hotlisted you, before you have had a chance to block them, they can still know when you log in, are on line and wherever you visit on site...being stalked is no fun at all. If you can tie the block to the IP addy...all the better, although folks having a static IP addy are far and few...hope this consult you are doing bears some well needed fruit.

I hope the block will work both ways, so if I block you I am invisible to you.

I believe it is vital the 'Global Block Button' must be easily accessible and quick and simple to operate from anywhere on the site. For example, at present the block is almost impossible to operate by a popular cammer as the usernames scroll through so quickly, then have to be copied in on block page. Could it operate by - highlight username > block - from anywhere ?

I wonder if the block could be extended to cover features that do not currently support blocks ? Absolute block all areas must be the best protocol (if possible) surely ?!

In chat many of us ladies have had to block rude or harrassing male members. We block them, then we cant see them, but they can still see everything we say in chat. Shouldnt a block go both ways then? So if you block them so you cant see them, then they shouldnt be able to see you?
