Misinformation Abounds
Misinformation Abounds What is there to do on a Sunday morning when you've had no sleep to speak of? Veg out in front of the morning news shows, of course. This morning, on Today in New York, they just had on this woman who has written a cookbook for people with food allergies. She was, of course, one of those people who advocates no animal protein in your 's diet, no processed foods, well, she rubbed me the wrong way the instant I saw her. Think typical NYC hipster who thinks she knows better than anyone else. Well, I was only half paying attention until she advocated honey in your baby's diet as a natural and healthy alternative to refined sugar. Um, no. Mind you, for those over a year old, honey is fine. Honey is great for sore throats, it has a natural antibiotic, it can decrease your chances of cancer, it's good for an upset stomach, can help prevent ulcers and can be used to treat gangrene. It reduces yeast infections and studies have shown it's more affective than Silvadene in healing burns. It also contains botulism spores. While these spores occur naturally in honey. When adults eat it, it's not strong enough to kill them. It just passes right through you, without even a sign of food poisoning. However, in babies under a year old, it can kill them. Infant botulism deaths are most common in California, Utah and Pennsylvania in this country. The only continent where infant botulism hasn't killed a is Africa. Honey is a major cause, as is contaminated dirt and dust. The bacteria invades the gastro-intestinal tract and symptoms start in three to thirty days. The first symptom a baby will have is constipation. Next will come listlessness, the appetite decreases, the cries become weaker. If the disease progresses beyond the mild form, difficulty eating, suckling, crying and even breathing will occur. Typically, if your infant comes down with botulism, isn't misdiagnosed and lives, the average hospital stay is a month in ICU. So you'd better have great health insurance. Basically, honey can be very harmful to your baby's health, especially raw, unprocessed honey. If you're breast feeding, the spores can be passed to the through your milk. So, no honey while breast feeding either. Avoiding honey is the number one way to prevent infant botulism. So, if any of you buy this hipster's book, don't take her advice on honey. I'd say I'm amazed that got past the editors, but I'm not. How do I, a childless woman who would rather die than give birth even know this? For years now, Discover Magazine has run a monthly feature called "Vital Signs." It is always something that has the doctors baffled. A few years ago, they did infant botulism. I read it and said to myself, "Honey? Honey is toxic? Holy shit!" I can't tell you about one other article in that monthly feature that I've ever read. But that one stuck with me, simply based on the fact I was so shocked that honey could kill. |

Yup... the doctors told us all of this when mine were born... right there in NY. The women was clueless... the TV show for having this on is likely border line negligent because you know there are people watching that who will believe it... and children will pay. Thanks for the post... good luck with the sleep.

wow...I will remember that Ann thank you! That woman definately needs her head pulled out of her a$$ if she's encouraging parents to not feed their children animal proteins....what is she, a complete VEGAN? Please gag me if she is! I don't have anything against them, but when they try to push their beliefs and shit on everyone else is when I have a problem! I'm leaving the site end of March. To those who want to keep in touch, see blog for details.

Excellent point, Miss! "Debriefing" people who've seen something or other on TV takes up a large part of my day. The world is filled with "sexual intellectuals" (read "fucking know-it-alls") like this person you describe, and they cause much confusion and anguish. When will people realize that the Media, TV in particular, is in the business of ENTERTAINMENT, and not education! "Nature always favors the hidden fault. "- (Murphy's Third Law)

Missann, you ought to provide a public service and send this post to the editors of that wank's book. Especially in light of the fact that the people who will be atracted to her book will be those who will be happily looking for a substitute for refined sugars for their sweet little babies.

All that drama over some honey? Babies have been fed honey for ages......and it will continue. There's something to be said for Darwinism. Ann? DIV "My every move is a calculated step, to bring me closer to embrace an early death." -Tupac Shakur

Thanks pink! Canton, think of my pain. I have to ride the subway with these people. elysian, your kids must not have had allergies. I'm sure she was told when she had hers. Which was born allergic to everything. But you know what the health nuts are like. But when my nephew was born, I was the one to give my sister this information. The hospital never did. mizzkitka, you wouldn't believe how many of the vegan crowd feel, once a child is off the mother's milk, it has no need for animal protein. Yet they get insulted when you mention the healthy grey pallor of their skin. When I was a veghead for 20+ years, my doctor and my mother's best friend who was an RN kept a close eye on me and kept warning me not to go vegan. Even adults need a certain amount of animal protein. Dysgyzed, don't be ashamed. It's amazing what people learn from prime time anymore. Little kids have saved the lives of their parents from watching shows like that. But luckily, it was the Sunday edition of Today In NY, so low, low ratings. And yeah, I want to be the one to buy her son a McDonald's hamburger. Heh. Lil, it really is. Unless of course, you try to feed it steak, without pureeing it first. But not all doctors tell parents about it. popmuse, I can understand not feeding your kid animal proteins if they're allergic to all things animal. But otherwise, to promote veganism to a child is wrong. Not to mention, there are people allergic to soy products. Hey, wanna wrap up in rodent pelts, (fur) and hit a PETA rally with me? nessus, I know how you feel. Debriefing the people I know on the lastest email forward has been known to take up weeks for me. I do have some of people who were the biggest offendered conditioned now, to either check Snopes or Vmyth before asking me if something is true and forwarding it to everyone they know. The sexual intellectuals really get to me, though. I spend a lot of time on this site trying to explain to them they've got the facts wrong. WantMore> I wasn't paying enough attention to get her name or the name of the book. Then they started with the slide show and I started paying attention right before the bit on honey being a healthy alternative to refined sugars. Just as I was thinking, "but blackstrap molasses is the only sweetener with nutrients," she started talking about it. I checked the website for the show and her segment wasn't listed. Of course. But probably good, as that's that much less publicity she's getting. papy, baklava... mmmmm.... I really do think more doctors here should tell parents about this. Kids have ended up dying from it, especially in this country. It would seem some doctors do tell patients about it. But you do know, people are going to do as they damned well please, especially vegans. They don't get any animal protein, which is important to brain fuctions. Division, yes, I do suppose of someone goes against what the doctors tell them and continue to feed babies honey, it is Darwinism at work. But in this day and age, I can see people suing the honey companies for not having warning labels on the product, that it's not appropriate for children under 1 year of age.

Honey..... I suppose it could be worse. They could start feeding their babies chili..... That would really put a damper on things. DIV "My every move is a calculated step, to bring me closer to embrace an early death." -Tupac Shakur
