Cummingtonite? Wait, Really?
Cummingtonite? Wait, Really? The rock pictured at the left has the unfortunate name of cummingtonite. It is a compound mineral, comprised of magnesium iron silicate hydroxide. It is also a fairly common rock. At first, I thought a perv of a geologist had named it that for a laugh. But no. It was first found in 1824 near Cummington, Massachusetts. So the geologist who named it had no idea it's name would be a dirty pun in another 150 years. Which also means, it's not actually pronounced "cumming-tonite", but instead, "cummington-ite". I actually thought it was a practical joke when I was sent to a site mentioning it. But it would seem it's a well documented mineral. I just felt the need to share. |

So it's all in how you pronounce the penultimate syllable: tuh or too. When correctly viewed, everything is lewd. Tom Lehrer thanks for sharing! John Lee Hooker Recommended: [blog lucyjane78]

There was a funny article about English place names, like Penistone, which they like to pronounce Pen-is-tone. So are you cumming tonight? Everything is lewd if you have a properly dirty mind...

One would think this, understandably, but the dictionary divides it this way: kuhm-ing-tuh-nahyt Like stalagmite stuh-lag-mahyt or pyrite pahy-rahyt the ite syllable includes the preceding consonant. However, I was incorrect in this way: So many people pronounce tonight tuh-nahyt where I come from--and regardless of where the accent or the pause is placed, there is no escaping this unintended--I'm sure--connotation. This is what happens when I post too early in the morning. John Lee Hooker Recommended: [blog lucyjane78]
