Are You Kidding?

I just received my medical records after someone on the support group website I joined suggested I request them. I had complained that I don't feel like my doctors keep me as informed as I want them to.

What a surprise!

My records were FULL of information I knew nothing about. Important things that I can NOT imagine not neing told about.

Ater my valve replacement surgery my sternum was closed with the usual wires AND "several" plates. How many is several? What are the plates made of? Is there information on longterm effects?

I looked it up online and there was sparse information, saw a few pictures of several different types. They are purported to help with sternal stability in repeat sternotomy patients and this was my second. Why in the heck wouldn't they tell me about this? I am definitely making a call Monday morning to get the scoop.

Then I read that I had acute postoperative anemia, left bundle branch block, high degree AV block, atrial fibrillation, sinus tach, second degree AV block Mobitz type 2, and 8 episodes of non-sustained V-Tach.

I was told NONE of this.......guess that explains why the nurses freaked out on a few occasions and why the electrophysiologist made so many visits to me prior to determining I needed a pacemaker.

Sheesh!

They made me look like a bit of an idiot when my cardiologist was explaining that they could see how many episodes of A-Fib I had after reading my pacemaker and I said "What is A-Fib?" I had only been told about ONE type of heart block and that was complete heart block which is why they said I needed the pacemaker.

I am so angry I could spit nails! My mother said "maybe they didn't tell you so you wouldn't freak out". I still think they should have told me at least when I was discharged and they had resolved most everything.

Don't get me wrong, I think my surgeon/doctors were fantastic brilliant people who took excellent care of me and saved my life. That said, however, I think they NEED to be more informative.

How can something like this even happen?

This is how it happens... Most "civilians" know nothing of electrophysiology of the heart, they know nothing about heart blocks or what causes them and if there are other forms of treatment than having a pacemaker put in. Pacemaker is the easiest and most reliable way to make sure your heart gets the message to beat a sufficient number of times to put blood in your brain. Most blocks cause bradycardia, meaning the heart beats slowly, you don't get enough O2 to the brain and you feel very tired and get dizzy when you get up. There are other types of blocks that are associated with tachycardia but are much less common than the bradys. Ventricular tachycardia is a horse of a different color, if sustained it can kill you, pacemaker or not. So I am sure they put you on a medicine like Amiodorone or something to keep your heart rate low and just let the pacer override the natural pacemakers your heart was born with. Plus, surgeons are the worlds worst at thinking everyone other than them is a dumbass. If there's anyway I can help translate etc, let me know. AbsolutelynormalRN (ACLS, PALS, TNCC)

It's a good thing that you had such great doctors in your time of need. Just think of all the people who left an operating room with surgical tools left in them or the guy who had the wrong leg amputated. Malpractice insurance rates have run many a doctor right out of business. It is little wonder that hospital administrators and insurance companies want their doctors to say as little as possible.
I count my blessings every day!

I was so fortunate to have such kind, brilliant, helpful doctors along the way with this.....

Yes, Dear. You would be more comfortable knowing more about your medical condition.

I hope you can stay closer to the records and learn.

I am not around much lately. trucking hard and getting bored with here once again.

I start rec-v'g my Social check in January --depressing. A casino visit is in the works for the first check --right after I make a copy of it before I cash it at the bank. hehe!

Golly, will it bounce, you think??

Happy to hear your recovery is going well.
Don't blame you for being peeved, though.
There had to be a reason those docs were holding out on you.
Just can't imagine it being a good one.

Happy Holidays!

True, and I found out one more thing when I saw my cardio yesterday. I found out that my EF% from the echo I had done at the hospital on day #3 was 65%.....pretty damn good! Really makes me wonder how it fell to 39% just one month later though. He said not to worry about it and wait till the next echo in 3 months to see what happens.

My brother-in-law is a brilliant Dr. and always thought it best to just be a brilliant Dr. and not bother the patients or their families with the all bits and details, only the results. When his own mother had serious health issues and was left out of the loop so to speak, his attitude toward his own patients changed to be more open and forth coming. He’s nearly human now, but still a brilliant Dr.

In addition to looking for personal answers, I’m glad you give credit to those who were there to save your life, thankfully they were able to do so.

H.

Next time I go to the hospital, I'll be asking a lot of questions from now on. I guess they don't tell if you don't ask!! At least you're back in good shape again. That's the main thing. Just don't get close to any poweful magnets or you may get stuck to them.

Doctors think they know everything so therefore they only need to tell you want they want. I would go in and tell him that you want to know about everything when it comes to your health. How can you make decisions if you don't know everything. Well girl take care. I am doing very well am excited about Christmas. John goes back to court Wed. with the crazy bitch hopefully she will loose her visitation. There last court date will be Jan 16 that finishes divorce, property, alimony, and child support which she hasn't had to pay a dime. Cross your fingers she will move back to Tenn. with her parents and leave us alone. Hope you and your friends have a great Christmas..

It did make snse, she has been so helpful to me with her firsthand knowledge. My opinion is still that they need to be more informative, perhaps tell me exactly what IDoKnowYou said, explain that some rythm issues are occurring but that they are on top of it and will keep me posted. I especially would want to know about the sternal plates as they are permanent.

Thanks for the hug!

What you say sounds logical and makes sense. As soon as I finally came to and they removed the vent I asked what time it was.....they said it was 1:30 a.m. Tuesday. I said "Tuesday?!" "Does my family know this?" (I had my surgery Monday at 7:30 a.m. At that time they explained why I was sedated longer and I remember saying to them "Oh, I doubt I will remember a bit of this". and I didn't.

My suggestion would be to go over the IMPORTANT parts at discharge. My discharge was very rushed and short.

From now on I will just ask for the records after I have something done, that way there will be no misunderstanding or miscommunication. Then if I don't understand something written on medical jargon I will look it up online and if no info there, ask the doc.

Also it good thing that you find out more detail information about your health which is good time to ask your doctor to see if those are true and explain it. I personal feel the doctor should have told you this with explain that way you will know what to do with your health. Don't forget to tell doctor "Thanks for save my life".
Oh yeah, I repeatedly thanked my surgeon already at the hopsital and again at my final check up with him. He was a very nice man.

I continue to dig and look things up on Google.....findig out more info every day.

I find that horrifying! How much less work it would seem to be to me to just do things right. Keep accurate records, inform patients etc..... your hubby sounds lucky to make it through that.

At this point I carry much of my medical information with me at all times. I have my meds list, valve replacement card, and pacemaker card.

I'll second that. Sometimes it is things they consider inconsequential but include in the records for completeness sake. Other things they just don't want to spend time explaining since they feel there is nothing you can do about it. Sometimes it is because they are lazy. LOL Until we all carry around our own medical records with us all the time I think it is a good idea to know everything that is in our records in case we aren't near that care provider.

Thanks, I am feeling better all the time.

It does seem as though we are taking up too much of their time doesn't it? Maybe they should then have some other staff explain it, eh?
