Great News

My friend, Derek stopped by tonight! Whats so great about that you ask? Well, he is the young man who was in a terrible accident a while back and we were told he would most likely not survive his injuries.

Derek had been drinking earlier in the night and on his way home he lost control of his vehicle and slammed head on into a tree. He had such terrible swelling of his brain that they removed the top portion of his skull to allow for swelling. He broke nearly every bone in his face and was in such poor condition they could not insert a feeding tube for the first 8 days after the accident.

When he showed signs of fighting the ventilator they did tests and determined he was not brain dead, but predicted that with the damage to his frontal lobe IF he survived, his entire personality would change.

After many surgeries and months and months of rehabilitation he is a reconstructed, walking, same old Derek miracle!

He looks different to me, I can see changes in his facial features from the vast titanium reconstruction, but I still easily recognize him as Derek and he looks FANTASTIC!

That's great to hear! The pic accompanying this post surprised me. Apparently, the reconstructive surgeries worked wonders. He looks just like you!

LOL....leave it to you Dana.....you cute lil smart-ass!

I wanted to ask if I could take his pic, but was worried what he might think or that he would freak at me asking etc....LOL I played it safe for this visit.

He certainly is! Most people don't recover from such sever brain swelling. I think he realizes how lucky he is.

I have a VERY similar story/friend. He was driving home from a bar one night, drunker than a hootie owl, with another friend in the car. He lost control and went into a telephone pole. The pole in question came right through the 'A' pillar (Driver side of the windshield) and his head hit the pole at an estimated 50-55 mph.

He was in a comma for three weeks, brain sweeling etc. They weren't sure if he'd make it.

To make a long story short, he did make it although he had to relearn how to walk, talk and well virtually everything he's still alive.

He didn't know who I was originally even though he and I had been lifelong friends but slowly but surely parts of his memory, pre-accident did come back.

As a side light, before the accident, he had just purchased a really sweet 1968 Camaro that he intended on fixing up. He had taken it somewhere to get some work done on it and to this day, he has NO IDEA where. We NEVER saw that car again. Somebody realized that he had forgotten about it and kept it. Rat bastards eh?

He's NOT the same person as before but at least he IS alive and kicking. And yes, he's still drinking. -tm

That person who kept his car will get bit in the ass by Karma some day.....

Derek so far is NOT drinking but maily because they said it could kill him. I guess whatever works, eh?

Glad to hear your friend made it. Changed personality is better than no person.

Purple he got a few angels we think, and you should polish them wings of yours. Recovery is alway based on the freinds we have. great for him by all means. Dandy & Snatch

I think Derek's angel called in favors from friends.....he is SO lucky to be alive much less doing as well as he is. I remember the day they changed his prognosis to making it. My nephew, Derek's good friend, wept.

It's great that occasionally bad things really can end well. Derek is a VERY lucky young man and I hope he makes the most of his second chance.

lucky indeed. The brother of a coworker had a head injury and ended up in a coma for a month. They had already decided to pull the plug when he woke up. His personality did change.

The perversity of the universe is unbounded.

Lucky! My daughter and her friend were in a severe accident also. Daughter and friend were ejected and her friend lost the left side of her head and rolled back her face. Rebuilt her face and took awhile for her brain to get back to normal size than the "plate" was placed over her brain now the pressure is back and her eye's turned grey and they air-evaced her back to the big city hospital. Don't look good for her or my other daughter who was driving who'll do time for involuntary man-slaughter as it was her car should she check-out: life can be a bitch at times.

purpletrashcan replies on 7/30/2008 8:56 am:
I will keep your daughter and her friend in my prayers. NEVER give up hope even when it looks hopeless. I really feel for your daughter. Derek was never even charged with anything......he was alone in the car and I guess they thought he had enough to deal with.

Derek is VERY lucky to be alive. Not many people make it back from such severe brain swelling. I hope he makes the most of his second chance.
